Kata Hinterlechner lives and works in Vienna and Innsbruck.
Her artistic practice emerges from a deep engagement with the nature of images and the objects that inhabit our daily lives. Moving fluidly between collage, painting, photography, sculpture, and installation, Hinterlechner’s work questions boundaries—between mediums, between perception and memory, between the visible and the hidden.
Often beginning with what she calls an “anthropological image”—a culturally charged, found or constructed visual fragment—or with banal objects recontextualized through gesture, her practice unfolds as a quiet act of investigation. She is less concerned with representation than with resonance: with how form and context shape meaning, and how composition can become a thinking structure in itself.
Her works suggest that art is not merely made—it is revealed, layer by layer, through the act of attention. Since 2009, Hinterlechner has participated in numerous group exhibitions and performative interventions. In 2023, her work was featured at POSITIONS Berlin Art Fair, and she collaborated with the collective EXPERIMENTAL SETUP on a radical performance with the Wilten Boys’ Choir, staged in the charged industrial space of the old foundry at St. Bartlmä 3 in Innsbruck.
